catch up

hey all,
this blog will just be a quick review of the last couple of days :). just a heads up though, i'm going into this blog a little bit blind as to what to write. hopefully i come up with something substantial.

i'll start with where i left off last time - ready and raring to go to the neil finn gig. After Duckie had a job interview at uni, he came over to pick me up for a night at the seymour centre with the beloved frontman of crowded house. Duckie was still in his interview clothes and seeing him all dressed up in a tie made swan giggle. he looks very handsome.

we went to duckie's house for a bit where i ate half a mango muffin because i was a bit hungry and duckie changed into his concert clothes. that muffin was bloody fantastic. i even asked where he got it from. i must attain the recipe for this muffin and at least attempt to remake it. i know there is a great chance i will fail completely but there is also that slight chance that what i make will actually be edible, and i am willing to take it.

so we headed off to lidcombe station and played the 'he will have his way' album during the trip, skipping the sleepy jackson's rendition of 'better be home soon' each time it came on. every time i try to give that cover another chance, i end up being deeply insulted by it. darn sleepy jackson.

caught the train to redfern where we got off and, after many failed attempts, orientated ourselves to the direction of sydney uni. we stopped at the first cafe we saw to have dinner. i forget the name of the place but i highly recommend it (how helpful). it's a little indonesian joint and the lady who served us was just so welcoming. Tan Nhoooowun ordered a traditional indo dish but i couldn't look past the chicken burger. it was a lovely dinner and the lady even gave us directions to the city as well as a link to see the recipe of what duckie had. we are such humble customers from south west sydney.

we walked all the way to the seymour centre. it was quite the trek and there was a lot of back-and-forth wandering and all-around-lostness but we made it - just in time as well! we took our seats and 3 minutes later neil finn graced us with his presence on stage. that man is such a beautiful creature. he did the show solo, something i think would require guts and a whole lot of talent. hehe i may talk him up a bit because he should be used to performing solo pretty much every weekend, but that man engaged the audience in a way no other band or solo artist i've seen has ever done before.

he did sets on the firefinch and the piano and poured his heart out in all his songs. not only did his voice never fail him during the set, but you could tell that he was singing the songs with the same emotion and meaning that he had when he first wrote them. artists write songs and realise how naive they were later on in their careers, but neil's earlier songs - the ones he wrote with split enz - carried the same amount of depth as the original tracks (maybe even more depth...acoustic versions are always more heartfelt). i think duckie even shed a tear.

after a standing ovation for mr. finn, we started heading home. seeing as it was late on a wednesday night, it was decided that we would walk to central instead of redfern. the lights and buzz of broadway did make me feel much safer than if we made our way to redfern via those very dimly lit streets. we bought a slurpee - our first one of the summer - and made attempts at drinking it on the train home. it was a grand night.

other than that, there is not much to report on the happenings of my past week. i took on a couple of more shifts at work just covering for other teachers who have exams on. one of linh's classes was subject to the training session for the newbies. i actually thought sir was coming in and critiquing me with all the newbies so i nearly shat my pants. they took over the class one at a time and sir offered his advice and explained his own methods of teaching. it was very refreshing being in a classroom where he was up the front explaining things again. not to sound cheesy or anything, but it kind of gave me a better direction as to where i wanted to head with my teaching. i really need to reprimand some of my children.

and so ends another blog entry. i think that's all i wanted to say, seeing as i didn't know what to say to start with. hehe i am reading books again so hopefully this will mean more coherence in my entries!

Helene
